We've been using Amazon Subscribe & Save for over a year now and love the convenience factor. You can go here and read all about the S&S program but basically it's getting house hold items and groceries delivered free right to your home on a monthly date you choose. You subscribe to the items you want and they arrive in the monthly intervals you select. Amazon offers a discount if you use the program (usually 5% but I've seen 20% on some items). We also like the fact that it lets you cancel any S&S item at any time and you can also skip deliveries. There are coupons attached to certain items and with a single click you can clip them and it applies to the S&S item. No more manually clipping coupons, struggles driving and parking at Costco, no more hauling packages from the car to home and it used to be until very recently no sales tax which meant big savings!
Since they started charging sales tax in California a few months ago I started wondering if I am paying too much for the convenience. I was not going back to Costco (there is just too much pain there and as far as I've seen there really is not that big a price difference) but there are other online stores like Walmart.com offering similar services. Also came across a huffington post article and another article from moneytalksnews.com that referenced consumer reports that indicated that Walmart was way cheaper than Amazon. So it was time to do my own investigation and if it saved us a significant amount of money each year we were going to make the switch to Walmart.com.
For the comparison I took the first ten items in my Amazon S&S account and put together a Google spreadsheet comparing Amazon prices to Walmart. You can see the results below.
It is evident that Amazon S&S is cheaper than Walmart by about 20% and I disagree with the two aforementioned articles that Walmart offers cheaper prices than Amazon. If you shop diligently I believe you will find that Amazon is not only convenient and easy but offers some of the cheapest prices. There was only 1 item that Walmart had a lower price for. There were several items like the Greenies we get for our dog and the pampers that had a big price difference. After my little research I am convinced that Amazon has lower prices than Walmart and will be sticking with them. It must also be noted that Amazon's customer service and return policy are just outstanding.
Note: I am in no way affiliated with Amazon.com or any of its subsidiaries.
